The effects of smoking are widespread and very destructive

The effects of smoking are widespread and very destructive. It is in fact the single most cause of preventable death in the world.

Smoking affects your body, it affects your mind, it affects your family and relatives and it has an effect on your environment.

When I used to smoke smoking really started to have an effect on the functioning of my lungs and I had that unproductive cough that was so difficult to control.

Smoking also controlled my mind and actions.

It was so difficult to be without cigarettes. Smoking became my ever present boss. I had that “monkey on my back”, and I had to get rid of it.

What are the effects of smoking?

The widespread effects of smoking can kill.

COPD/emphysema and lung cancer claim many lives, but the single biggest killer of smokers is heart disease. Smoking causes one in five deaths from heart disease. In younger people three out of four deaths from heart disease are caused by smoking.

Smoking has a negative effect on nearly every organ of the body. It causes a number of diseases and it has a detrimental impact on the health of smokers in general.

Some of the negative effects of smoking are—

1) Respiratory problems, lower level of lung functioning and reduced rate of lung growth.

2) Higher risk of heart disease, stroke, cancer and emphysema.

3) Smoking causes fat deposits that narrow and block blood vessels. Some times smokers end up having their limbs amputated.

What are the social effects of smoking?

Opening a packet of cigarettes and offering a cigarette to another smoker already increases the level of dopamine (the “happy feeling”) in the brain. Smokers therefore form relationships with fellow smokers in a way that really strengthens the smoking habit.

Smoking can be used to construct identity and to associate with certain groups of people.

Even anti-smoking movements have caused smokers to join together. Smokers saw this as an assault on personal freedom and it has created an identity among smokers as being rebels.

Medical researchers have also found that smoking is a predictor of divorce and that 53% of smokers more divorce than non smokers.

What are the effects of smoking on pregnant women and the unborn fetus?

When a pregnant woman smokes it will have a negative influence on her unborn baby.

The unborn child will inhale smoke that the mother breathes in. The unborn child will also receive a reduced supply of oxygen and the oxygen will also be replaced by harmful substances.

The unborn baby will also receive a constant supply of nicotine resulting in suffering from nicotine withdrawal as soon as the baby is born.

Overall an unborn baby is put under stress when the mother smokes and it can lead to underdevelopment and early suffering of the baby.

Even if the mother does not smoke, but if the baby is exposed to passive smoke the same negative effects will be the result.

What smoking effects are there on the functioning of the cilia?

We find the tiny hair like cilia on the surface of cells to sweep away debris from lung and nasal cavities.

When a person is smoking, too much dirt accumulate on the cilia and toxins from smoke then remain in the lungs. The cilia get damaged and the lungs cannot move mucus out of the system.

A smoker is left with a high risk of respiratory infections or chronic bronchitis. Smoking could eventually lead to COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease), emphysema or lung cancer.

When you quit smoking the cilia recovers fast and easy. Even after the first three days a slight improvement already takes place.

Can you counteract the smoking effects with diet and supplements?

When you are a smoker or an ex-smoker you can reduce some of the harm caused by cigarettes by choosing your food wisely.

New research concludes that certain compounds in fruit and vegetables can counteract the damage caused by smoking.

There are flavonoids (plant pigments) compounds that have anti-inflammatory antioxidant properties that could help protecting a person against lung cancer. These compounds are catechin, quercetin, and kaempferol.

Food to eat that contain these flavonoids are—

1)Quercetin-Onions, apples and beans.

2)Catechin-Green tea, black tea and strawberries.

3)Kaempferol-Sprouts, apples and Brussels.

If you are a smoker it will be beneficial to eat these foods. I say it is best never to smoke. Second best is to become an ex-smoker and then use these foods, and I think this is the choice that most of the readers have to make.

To conclude:

If we want to know how to reverse the side effects of smoking we can take certain steps-

1) Follow a proper nutritional plan. Eat the right food in order to detoxify the body and to repair damaged tissue that was caused by your smoking habit.

2) Follow a complete workout to make you strong and to improve the functioning of your body. It is really important to retrain and improve your cardiovascular system again.

3) If you are prepared to follow a lung detoxification process it will make quitting easier. It will be easier, because as soon as the lungs become cleaner the body becomes quit averse to cigarette smoke again.

We must always remember it is never too late to stop. The sooner we do it the sooner we will rid ourselves of the “monkey”.

The best is to face the smoking effects and start working to free yourself and own and control your own life stile again.
